EDUCATION

Training future Neurosurgeons and Neurologists has been, and continues to be, a top priority for Semmes Murphey. With philanthropic support from hospital, industry, and community partners, the Foundation offers four Endovascular Fellowships and also underwrites the Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

We also partner with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center to provide student, resident and fellow training in the Departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology and Anesthesiology. Our physicians and surgeons serve as the faculty for the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.

Fellowship in Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery

This fellowship is one of the highest volume training opportunities in the United States and was one of the first CAST certified endovascular fellowships. The course of study for trainees includes the medical, surgical and endovascular management of stroke, arteriovenous malformations, carotid and cerebral occlusive disease, cerebral aneurysms, trauma and tumors in both adults and children. The faculty includes vascular neurosurgeons, interventional neurologists and an interventional neuroradiologist who work together to cover four neurointerventional centers.

Before starting the fellowship, applicants should have completed residency training in either neurology or neurosurgery and be licensed independently to practice medicine in the United States. Applicants from a neurology training background should have completed fellowship in either stroke or neurocritical care and applicants from a radiology training background should have already completed a fellowship in diagnostic neuroradiology.

To begin the application process, please send a letter of application and a curriculum vitae to Dr. Daniel Hoit, who is the fellowship director. In addition, please have three letters of recommendation sent by people familiar with the applicant and their qualifications. We would prefer that applicants waive their right to see these letters of recommendation. Selected applicants will be invited to interviews in Memphis and the fellowship is typically filled 2-3 years in advance. These materials and general questions can be sent to Dr. Hoit through DJ Carney at dcarney@semmes-murphey.com or 901-522-2654.
